Abstract Community Initiated Ecotourism in the Indian Himlayas

My study focuses on the growth of high altitude tourism in the Indian Himlayas and seeks to establish the need for community initiated ecotourism in order to ensure economic prosperity and environmental stability. The study is drawn from intensive field reseach in the Gangotri region of the Himalayas, a focal point of many mountaineering expeditions, trekking and adventure sports as well as being a very popular pilgrim centre. The question I seek to answer is whether all these activities can be conducted in a manner that they do not conflict with one another and that a certain ethic about eco friendly tourism is inculcated among the participants. I must add that this is just a provisional summary, I shall send a revised synopsis in due course.
