AbstractLivestock composition and subsistence strategy: a key for understanding diversity and homogeneity of Tibet cultural area

Livestock has been an important means of adaptation by cultural Tibetans to their varied or varable ecological/economic condition of Himalayan highlands. In this report, historical change of the livestock composition in Khumbu and other Himalayan highlands will be analysed with historical shift of subsistence strategy adopted by local peoples, based on characteristic of each livestock type and its way of rearing, together with its economic target. And close relation between the two will be pointed out. This report will conclude that the livestock the livestock composition can be recognised as a key index for understanding diversity and homogeneity of Tibet cultural area.
