Abstract: Adventure Education: a gateway to Eco-tourism and Mountaineering

People who live in the city would not go to the nature even if they really wanted to. To a certain extent they have some fear about the nature, because they do not familiar with it. Education nowadays being criticized as fragmented and alienated to the real world that we are living. Students in the school and university only learn from books or surf in the internet to obtain knowledge. The academic world is subject-based and purely concentrated in one or a limited areas. Geographers can finish their study in the library, biologist spend most of their time in the laboratory to get results of their experiments. However, Adventure Education make a significant contribution to the holistic development to an individual and cross the subject boundaries. Through first-hand experiences, it encourages greater understanding of the relationships between ourselves, others and the environment. It motivates people to go outdoor to appreciate and respect the nature. The mountaineering expeditions of HKU give us some insights into a collaboration of the physical, environmental, personal, social and anthropological dimension of education. It should be an intergal part of our curriculum and need lots more exploration.
