Abstract: The Role of Local Communities in Natural Resources Conservation: A Case Study of Sagarmatha National Park and its Buffer Zone.

Twenty-five years after the establishment of Sagarmatha National Park in Solukhumbu District of Eastern Nepal, its Buffer Zone was declared by His Majesty's Government (HMG) of Nepal on 01 January 2002. The Sagarmatha National Park Buffer Zone encompasses communities of Khumjung and Namche Village Development Committees (VDCs) within the Park, and Chaurikharka VDC outside the Park. While Buffer Zone Regulations and Guidelines are in place to facilitate management and implementation of the Sagarmatha National Park Buffer Zone, the process of building capacity of Buffer Zone institutions is currently on-going. In the past, community-based organizations – such as Community Forest User Groups, Women's Groups, Youth Clubs – have been successful in conserving their natural resources that contributed to the establishment of Buffer Zone. The accomplishments of these organizations must now be mainstreamed into the Buffer Zone management system to effectively conserve the natural resources of the Sagarmatha National Park and its Buffer Zone.
